Ana Mazzei, Espetáculo (detail), 2016

Isabella Lenzi reviews Ana Mazzei's Espectáculo [Spectacle] (2016), a piece commissioned for the 32nd edition of the São Paulo Biennale.

Ana quotes the sentence that opens the monologue of William Shakespeare's As You Like It: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players". Her Espectáculo, refers to the world as theatre. The piece stages before us the social masks that we put on, the codes of conduct that we are daily subjected to and our tendency to classify, frame and systematise time/space, art, the unknown and that which is different.
